Overview

Primary care providers frequently encounter patients with signs or symptoms that may indicate cardiovascular pathology.  The goal of this conference is to provide an update and overview on the most common cardiovascular conditions seen in primary care, and to provide a sound framework for management of these patients.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Assess treatment strategies and manage high blood pressure based on updated clinical practice guidelines.

  2. Classify patients with chest pain and order the appropriate stress and imaging tests for patients based on current guidelines.

  3. Interpret and treat atrial fibrillation to reduce stroke risk from atrial fibrillation, and when to refer to a specialist to consider rhythm control with antiarrhythmics or catheter ablation.

  4. Utilize novel diabetes drugs that have proven benefit in reducing cardiovascular events.

  5. Evaluate and manage patients with valvular heart disease; identify which heart murmur patients should be referred for an echocardiogram and when patients should be referred for valve repair or replacement
