Meet Dr. Anand Muthu Krishnan, an expert in the field of Interventional Cardiology, to discuss his journey into medicine, his approach to patient care, and the exciting evolution of his field in advanced imaging. Dr. Krishnan shares his passion for advancing heart health, as well as his commitment to helping patients navigate the complexities of cardiovascular disease with personalized, cutting-edge treatment options and shared decision making.
Hi, good morning. I'm AnAnd Mutta Krishnan. I'm one of the new interventional cardiologists that has joined the Centra Medical Group. I will be practicing predominantly in the South side Center hospitals, namely being at the Norfolk Heart Hospital and uh sometimes we will be going to the Virginia Beach Hospital as well. So, having trained predominantly in interventional cardiology, my clinical focus is coronary artery disease and the invasive management of the same using stents with a particular focus in optimizing those stents using modern techniques such as intra coronary imaging and physiological measures. So when I was back in medical school in India, I had a particularly uh great experience uh during my cardiology rotation. Uh I saw a lot of patients there with uh rheumatic heart disease, which is still prevalent in that portion of the world. And uh cardiology was one of those subspecialties which allowed me to practice uh as a preventive doctor. But at the same time, an interventional doctor which would allow me to fix the problems with procedures but also have long term relationships with my, my patients. I think being a cardiologist and practicing as an interventional cardiologist gives me the unique opportunity to not only take care of patients in the acute setting when they have heart attacks, but also take care of them in the outpatient setting and prevent a lot of these uh diseases, which is the number one killer in our country. Uh The uh the one thing that I do uh focus on is uh shared decision making and there's great data out there. But I also think it's a great care philosophy to involve the patients in their care as equal partners and try to come up with the best answer that would work for them being fresh out of training. I was looking for a program which would be a large volume referral center which would be taking care of the sickest of the sick patients while also having the opportunity to work with more experienced providers. And Sana was one of those health care systems where we have excellent operators and I'm looking forward to growing into the system and also learn from some of my senior partners here in the cardiology, being such a vast field, we are all forced to pick a topic. But I would say that the focus of using intra coronary imaging, uh specifically both intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography to the stents that we've placed to make sure that they last longer in our patients would be my focus over here at center. Even though this has been around for quite some time, I think this is something that we can grow into and grow upon.
