Meet Bariatric Surgeon, Gregory Schroder, M.D. Dr. Schroder discusses his area of focus, his path to medicine, and how Sentara is a Center of Excellence for Weight Loss Surgery.
Hi, I'm Gregory Schroeder. I'm a bariatric surgeon with Sentara Medical weight loss group work out of oversee and care plex. So my areas of focus in the bariatric program on surgical weight loss. We also do medical weight loss within our practice. But I focus on mainly doing sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and revision surgery for patients who have had weight loss surgery in the past and failed. So I'm recently moved to the area in april, joining the Sentara comprehensive weight loss program because I believe it is truly a comprehensive weight loss program, which is something that is unique to the Sentara system and most other systems don't have. I've been in two other bariatric practices in Richmond Virginia. Uh those practices had surgical weight loss but we didn't have the medical, psychological and nutritional support that we do here at Sentara and I'm very excited about being here and being part of the program. So my path to medicine was actually babysitting for a eye doctor when I was a kid. Um he would talk to me about medicine, take me actually to the hospital with him and do rounds and I always knew I wanted to use my hands. So surgery was the ideal opportunity for me to use my hands and follow the dream of being a doctor. So in my almost 30 years of bariatric surgery, the area of bariatric surgery truly has involved to a point where we have great outcomes and tremendous success with the programs. We now our center of excellence and what that means is we provide all of our patient information to a national organization that follows our outcomes. And if our outcomes aren't good enough, we are a center of excellence, but Sentara is a center of excellence. We have great outcomes and we provide excellent care to our patients.
