Chapters Transcript Video Provider Profile - Mark Bawcom, D.C. Meet Chiropractor, Dr. Mark Bawcom, as he discusses chiropractic, his patient centric approach, and what brought him to Sentara. Hello, my name is Mark Balham. I'm a chiropractor. I work at the Greenbrier Therapy Center. Well, statistically low back pain is the thing that most patients come in with. But we see all manner of other mostly musculoskeletal conditions associated with the spine, headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, pain is the thing that generates or that drives most patients into the office. Well, I take each patient as an individual, we look of course at their history both in terms of their history of trauma, history of surgery, what's going on at the time, what they're dealing with at that moment and then do a thorough examination and figure out what is the best approach for that individual. The consultation starts with them, filling out the appropriate paperwork. Of course, we sit down and discuss all the parameters of their history of their present condition of any of details that are pertinent to their presenting condition. We do an examination, we can do any kind of studies x-rays or otherwise that are necessary or warranted. And then it's a matter of deciding what's the best approach for that individual. I was in private practice in Virginia Beach for 25 years. And I was really interested in pursuing a more integrated approach to patient care. And so, working in the therapy center and working more closely with primary care physicians, and I think I can offer my specialty and incorporate that into the other modalities that are offered within the therapy center. One of the questions I'm often asked is, how do you refer? And certainly one direction is just to give the information about the provider to the patient and let them pursue that. But also if you put in an order in epic that will trigger the system to make some calls and carry some action to the patient rather than just waiting for them to act. And another note is that there are 13 different chiropractors in this entire system at this time. So if uh it's likely that one could be found that is geographically convenient for the patient.
